When installation is completed, uncheck the box labeled “Activate my computer now”. Don’t worry the point of this tutorial is not so that you can have Microsoft Sam recite the complete works of Nicholas Sparks, but rather to gain two cool new voices.ĭownload and install Microsoft Reader. This is a relatively large 69 MB file, so be prepared if you are using a Dial-Up internet connection.Īfter you install the SAPI5.1 package, you can select Mary or Mike from the Speech Control panel, and then use Microsoft Word, Agent, or Narrator to create Text-to-Speech applications.

To add Microsoft Mary and Microsoft Mike to your TTS Engine, you need to download and install the Microsoft Speech API 5.1 application. It is highly likely that you may have wanted your application to have a female voice, or at least a male voice that is more realistic than Microsoft Sam. These applications are a little bit out of date, and you probably won’t have any use for their original functionality, but by installing them, you can add a few more voices to your Text-to-Speech engine. We can add additional voices by installing some really old Microsoft applications. Necro-posting because this has a core idea of wider interest. It's too bad there's not some kind of limited time/function demo, if I could hear it in flight I'd know if it's what I want or not. Now that I know I can tell but it's extremely well done. I didn't realize it was a TTS voice until someone pointed it out during a Discord chat. I bring this up as one of their newscaster is "Robot Rachel". They do a really fantastic job with it and, for me, it just adds on to the immersion. What's great about it is every so often they play a news segment and fake product ads. It's a streaming station that plays music provided by the community (that fits with Elite, no Country!). Not sure if you're familiar with Elite Dangerous and by extension Radio Sidewinder. I actually speed up the built in Windows female voice (forget the name) by 1, I feel like that slight speed increase goes a long way toward realism. While $45 isn't the bad at the same time I'm not sure it's worth $45 to make the dozen or so custom commands I've created sound a bit better. Thanks for confirming about SAPI 5 voices. I don't think that because I'm a man and would want a woman, I just think they objectively are better. It also seems that female voices are far better than male. I definitely agree with you on the British voices, they real do sound the best.
